How the webcam test works
After you allow camera access, the page shows the live video from your webcam and reads its settings directly from the browser. The test asks for up to Full HD (1920×1080), so the resolution shown is the best your camera offers up to that size. Mirror flips the preview like a mirror, which is how most video-call apps show you to yourself; snapshots are always saved unflipped.
The preview is black or doesn't start
- Check the privacy shutter. Many laptops and webcams have a sliding cover or a camera-off key (often F8 or F10).
- Close other apps. Only one app can use some cameras at a time. Quit Zoom, Teams, Skype or OBS and reload.
- Pick the right camera. If you have several, choose another one from the drop-down.
- Re-plug USB webcams, ideally into a port directly on the computer rather than a hub.
- Allow camera access in the browser (icon left of the address bar) and in your system privacy settings.
Check your system camera settings
Windows 11 and 10
Open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera and turn on camera access, including for desktop apps. Some brands also have a camera switch in their own utility (Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, HP Support Assistant).
macOS
Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow your browser, then restart the browser.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 4K webcam show 1920×1080?
The test requests Full HD to keep it fast on every device. Most video-call apps also send 1080p or lower.
Why is the frame rate low?
Cameras lower their frame rate in dim light to get a brighter image. Add light in front of you, or close other apps using the camera.
Is the snapshot uploaded?
No. It's created in your browser and downloaded directly to your device.
