How the gyroscope test works
Your browser reads three kinds of motion data and this page shows them live:
- Tilt is the angle the device is held at, in degrees. Lying flat on a table, front–back and left–right should both be close to 0°.
- Rotation speed comes from the gyroscope, in degrees per second. It should be near zero while the device is still and jump when you twist it.
- Acceleration comes from the accelerometer, in metres per second squared. When still, gravity alone gives about 9.8 on whichever side faces down.
The bubble works like a spirit level: it turns green when the device is level to within one degree.
Readings look wrong?
- Turn off auto-rotate for a moment, as screen rotation can make the axes look swapped.
- Calibrate the compass by moving the phone in a figure-of-eight a few times.
- Stay away from magnets, such as magnetic cases and car mounts, which upset the compass.
- Restart the device if values freeze or never change.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone ask for permission?
Safari on iPhone and iPad asks before letting websites read motion sensors. Tap Allow; if you tapped Don't Allow, close the tab and open the page again.
The compass value is empty.
Some devices and browsers only provide tilt, not a compass heading. That's normal.
