1. Turn up the media volume
- Press a volume button on the side of the phone.
- Tap the three dots or settings icon on the volume bar to show all the sliders.
- Raise Media volume, which controls videos, music, games and websites.
2. Check Do Not Disturb and sound modes
Swipe down from the top of the screen and make sure Do Not Disturb is off, and that the phone isn't set to vibrate or silent. These can mute alerts and, on some phones, media too.
3. Disconnect Bluetooth
Sound may be going to earbuds, a speaker or a car stereo nearby. Turn Bluetooth off in Quick Settings and try again.
4. Clean the speaker
Dust and lint in the speaker grille, usually on the bottom edge, can muffle or block sound. Brush it gently with a soft, dry brush. Take off the case too.
5. Check the app
- Look for a mute button or volume setting inside the app or video player.
- In Chrome, websites can be muted: open Chrome's menu › Settings › Site settings › Sound and make sure sites are allowed to play sound.
6. Restart and update
- Restart the phone.
- Install updates under Settings › System › Software update (or Software update in Settings).
Still not working?
Try headphones. If sound works through headphones but not the speaker, the speaker is likely faulty. Start in safe mode (press and hold the power button, then press and hold Power off) to rule out an app; if the speaker is silent there too, it needs repair.
